Method 1: Reading the messages from the notification bar

We consider this as the best and fail-proof way to see the messages without opening the chat. In this method, you just have to read the messages from the notification bar and avoid tapping on the notification as it will lead you to the conversation with the person on Instagram and which in turn will mark your messages as read. This way you can read the messages directly without actually opening the chat conversation. Also, note that for this message to work properly you need to make sure you have turned on notifications for direct messages. In case you haven’t, here’s how to turn it ON.

Step 1: Open and login to the Instagram app and head towards the profile section by Tapping on your profile picture located at the right-hand corner below.

Step4: Select the Notifications option.

Step 5: Under the Push, notifications section find and, select the Messages and calls option.

Method 2: You can Read Instagram Messages While in Airplane Mode.

In this method whenever you feel like reading any of your messages and you don’t want the sender to know that you’ve read it you just have to turn on airplane mode before tapping any messages and open your inbox. Follow the steps below to know how this works:

Step 1: Open and log in to the Instagram app.

Step 2: Tap the Messenger symbol which is usually located at the top right. If you haven’t switched to the merged Instagram/Facebook Messenger inbox, tap the mail icon to open the Instagram Direct inbox.

Step 3: Then you need to Turn on Airplane Mode and make sure your data and Wi-Fi are off.

In case you are an Android user you have to, swipe down from the top of the screen to access the Quick Settings Menu then Tap Airplane mode ( symbol). And if you are an iOS user you can turn on airplane mode on an iPhone, by swiping down in order to open the Control Center and tap Airplane mode.

Step 4: Once the airplane mode is on then you can freely Read your messages.

Step 5: Now you can Exit the inbox and return to your profile page.

Step 6: Tap the menu icon (three vertical lines).

Step 7: Tap Settings from the options.

Step 8: Scroll down and tap Log Out.

Step 9: Turn off airplane mode.

Step 10: Log back into your account.

Note: Please note that it is important for you to log out Of your Instagram first then turn off your airplane and if you fail to do so the moment you turn on your data connection your messages will be marked as read/seen on Instagram.
