A Song of Ice and Fire as a legendary story really shook the whole world. The books have gained popularity faster than ever. But the unfinished story left true fans unsatisfied.
Soon, in 2011, fans found a fresh breath. On April 17, 2011, HBO released a hot series with characters already beloved by a million audience. Yeah, it is Game of Thrones. However, the final episode of Game of Thrones left fans in confusion. What else remains? Immerse yourself in the world of Game of Thrones but as a game format. It is impossible to deny the huge impact of this story not only on television but also on pop culture and the whole world.
Game of Thrones, with its intrigues, elaborate political environment, written out the universe with fire-breathing dragons and an army of white walkers – all this has become an excellent basis for video games. By the way, the opposite example of simple and addicting game is Agario. This is simple and very funny game that become enormously popular among students. Agario was released in early 2015, but still popular in many countries.
In fact, there are a huge number of game adaptations. But only a few we want to return again and again with a thirst for adventure.
Some gameplays have small changes in the plot or the nature of the characters. Others completely reshaped the world of the original story, having new characters and locations, and with them a lot of new intrigues.
There is a wide range of adaptations of any genre. Choose whatever you want: board games like Monopoly, mobile applications with periodic updates, unique browser games, PC games and others.
It doesn’t matter if you want to calmly upgrade your character, exploring the world of Westeros full of secrets and magic, take part in the battle for the Iron Throne in the army of Baratheon, manipulate others to achieve your goals like Lannister, seek the truth and go to it like Daenerys Targaryen, or just trying not to lose your head like Stark – our list of games will allow you to try all the roles. Everyone will find something beloved.
Anyone will tell you only about the best games in this industry, but you will rarely find games that have failed and are not worth your time. Let’s take a quick look at these games first.
- A Game of Thrones: Genesis. While this strategy, there is surprisingly much disappointment in it. Martin himself consulted the developers when creating the story, and advised interesting tricks. The gameplay is simple and based on the capture of houses and lands, and the main goal is the Iron Throne. You have the right to choose one side or the other, which has its advantages. The idea is great, as players move towards the goal, they can also accumulate different stats. Here it is possible to control not only the characters but even the majestic dragon of Targaryen. All these points sound tempting, but in reality, we get a very weak implementation. You have great power, but your opponents are extremely weak and stupid. All victories come easily. This discourages the desire to play when you do not meet any resistance on your way.
- Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows. The release was in 2020 and this game is suitable only for iOS devices. It would seem that for so long it was possible to monitor the game market and identify shortcomings to embody only the strengths of this genre in the game. But, alas, we again received a weak game that does not meet the recommendations. The story here begins a long time before the main events of Game of Thrones. But due to the weak content and flaws in performance, many moments seem too vague and leave many questions. For fans, this adaptation may seem boring. Plus, considering this is an iOS app, the fan base is kind of limited here.
- Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms. This adaptation was created based on the original story, but didn’t even enter the game world. The game rights passed from hand to hand, everyone added something of their own. But it wasn’t enough to get noticed in the demanding gaming world. As a result of many improvements and changes, the final version of Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming was finally released in 2019. This variation made it to our games list and we will talk about it later.
Now let’s move on to those adaptations that are worth your attention.
Blood of Dragons
Simple browser game with text basis for newbies that requires nothing more than an Internet connection. Most of the games entered the game market after the HBO series. But this one appeared back in 2007 thanks to the active social fan community.
For some, this was only the first stage of immersion in this universe. And for other players, it remains the only pre-adaptation to which they want to return.
A Game of Thrones: digital edition
This George R.R. Martin’s edition will appeal to fans of straightforward strategy. However, be careful, here you will have to work hard. Your skills should include building a winning strategy and choosing the right tactics. Even at the initial stages, you need to storm your brains. And the further you go, the more difficult it is to keep everything under control. But we are not afraid of obstacles and difficulties, are we?
Classically, you become a member of one of the houses to fight with other houses of Westeros. Gather resources, use them to defend your borders, and seize new lands. It is important not only to get involved in wars but also to pump diplomacy. There must be the right balance in order not only to survive but also to move forward.
The true essence of the original storyline is revealed in this game. It is very easy to get lost in the intrigues of Westeros, but whether you have enough skills to gain influence and power is a difficult question.
Game of Thrones by Telltale Games Series
In 2014, the Telltale Games team that knows a lot about good stories entered the market. This adaptation has become one of the best game incarnations of Game of Thrones with its same atmosphere and characters. The game is licensed by HBO and is based specifically on the series of this channel production. But like so many others, the game faced setbacks on its way to the hearts of fans.
This is an episodic game, covering the third – fifth season. You start with the story of the House Forrester, being loyal (or not entirely) to the Stark family. In the troubled situation in Westeros, the representatives of the house will have only one goal – to survive.
The game is kind of limited in actions. The main basis is narrative. But the game world is worked out pretty well, including the characters. There are even locations previously unknown to fans – Ironrath, Forrester’s castle. These details make the game deeper, although all the events revolve around one family.
Beyond the Wall
This mobile development is the most recent since the release took place only half a year ago. From the name, it is clear that the main location here is Castle Black, the Wall, and the wasteland with the white walkers and wildlings behind it.
In the game, you have to lead the Night’s Watch – gather a team, which will also feature original characters, complete tasks, and make sure that not a wild walker, wildling or giant, penetrates the Wall.
This strategy game with role-playing elements is available for free download on smartphones. You can upgrade your characters and enjoy the original storyline. The main series characters are announced for the game. But the events happen long before we meet these characters in the series.
Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming
Another browser game we mentioned earlier. Apart from the main plot, there are some additions here. In addition, audio effects, strong and lively visuals make it much easier to immerse yourself in the atmosphere. The game is periodically updated and will not let you get bored.
It’s the same strategy, but a slightly different concept. You play as Lord Westeros, who does not support bloody wars but strives to create peace between the Seven Kingdoms. A bit naive, don’t you think? After all, true fans know for sure that political wars, intrigues, and manipulations are the real essence of Westeros. And the coming winter will create even more obstacles because the night is dark and full of terrors…
Game of Thrones card game
Reigns: Game of Thrones is the hit card decision-making series.
This is a great RPG to get to know each character. You can put Cersei Lannister or Stannis Baratheon, or many others on the Iron Throne. As you open up more and more contenders to reign in Westeros, you will have to deal with their secrets and weaknesses.
This is an endless series of dilemmas. You need to slide your finger across the screen to choose only one fateful option. Each of them will have a huge impact on Westeros. Some events are linked and create a unique chain that will lead to a specific outcome.
Your main goal is, of course, not to die. Each decision affects game indicators such as a church, people, army, and economy. You need to make sure that none of them fall to zero or rise to a hundred. Otherwise, you will have to start the game again.
Behold the power of just one of your fingers.
Game of Thrones: Monopoly board game
Monopoly? A classic among board games. But this edition is really an explosive bomb!
Monopoly always has a fierce battle for resources, just like in Westeros the battle for land and the Iron Throne. This is the perfect match.
There is a struggle for financial power here. After all, whoever has the money, will be able to capture Westeros. A worthwhile option for true fans. It becomes much more interesting to play with friends or family.
Hasbro licensed the game, further confirming its status and reputation. This is a collectors edition with customized game parts, so Monopoly fans will be proud of this one.
Game of Thrones: Conquest
This mobile game was produced by Turbine in cooperation with Warner Bros. and HBO channel.
You get real power and can control Westeros. You are free to choose one of 30 characters and then decide Westeros fate. Whatever you want. You have to found one of the powerful houses of Westeros, fight for resources and locations, raise armies, destroy or rebuild cities – any efforts to take the Iron Throne.
There is a unique social interaction here. You can team up with some players against others. By recruiting friends, you will expand your influence and reach your goal faster. Capture over 120 original houses and locations alongside the beloved characters.
Choose your strategy and go to victory. It will not be easy.
The free app is already available on mobile platforms. There are some problems with optimization, but they do not spoil the impression of the game.
Game of Thrones: Ascent
The game runs through almost the entire cycle of the HBO series. With regular updates till 2019, players have literally followed the steps of the original characters, completing quirky in-game quests. The realism of this adaptation is impressive.
You will have to become a member of one of the seven main houses and, through warfare and trade, restore its majesty and glory. To spread influence, you can even create tactical alliances through marriage. Only influential persons create the fate of Westeros. Everything here is like in a real TV series.
But something still makes us sad. The story of this game ended together with the latest episode released from HBO.
Game of Thrones by Atlus US
The simple title of the same name stands out for its laconicism. The same cannot be said about the game itself, where dynamic events take place in real-time. Atlus US released this game together with Cyanide studio. And they have created a truly impressive story.
There are two main characters, between whom you will switch during the storyline. You have many opportunities to pump your characters and develop their skills. Diplomacy or bloody battles – whatever path you choose it will have consequences. In real-time, you can call the shots to your army. Moreover, when you command your army and make decisions, the game is not paused, but only slows down.
In the background, you can hear familiar music and voices. Everything is correct. Some of the actors in the series provide voiceovers for the characters they play.
The plot of the game is satisfying, but the graphics are rather weak. Nonetheless, this game has many loyal fans. Perhaps you will become one too.
As you can see, all games are in different genres and are very different from each other. Each adaptation has something of its own unique, but it is so imperceptibly intertwined with the original plot. Even if you love classics, you will still find an interesting option here to once again plunge into the incredible atmosphere of Game of Thrones.
